Part One: A Final Kindness

The hardest choices, steeped in love,
a final kindness from above.
To watch her go, and set her free,
from pain and frail mortality.

You knew her heart, her valiant fight,
a flicker of a fading light.
She stayed as long as she could stay,
and loved you more with every day.

The two will meet and run and play,
until they’re both with you someday.
And though a piece of your heart sleeps,
her love's a promise that she keeps.

The silence that will fill the air,
is proof of love beyond compare.
And you will find, you're not alone,
your two great loves have made it home.

Part Two: Ready for the Bridge

Don’t you worry, don’t you fret,
I am ready for this next step.
My legs are weak, my mind's a haze,
but I remember all our days.

The zoomies on the emerald lawn,
the pouncing that I’ve since outgrown.
I can’t quite catch the lizards now,
but I remember them all, somehow.

Your arms are where I want to be,
when I take flight and cross the sea.
The bridge is waiting, shining bright,
to take me to the endless light.

And there's another waiting, too,
who loved me just as much as you.
My Mike, my human, he'll be there,
to pet my ears and stroke my hair.

He'll say to me, "You made it home,"
"It’s time to chase and time to roam."
He'll tell me that he missed my bark,
and then we'll run into the dark.

I’ll keep a piece of your big heart,
and we'll be never, ever apart.
And when you miss me, close your eyes,
I’ll be right there, beneath the skies.
